When it comes to Japanese matcha, Uji (Kyoto) is the name most people recognize. But there's another origin quietly gaining attention among serious tea buyers: Nara. At waka matcha, we grow and source premium matcha from both regions — and understanding the differences between them can help you make smarter sourcing decisions for your business.
A brief history of both origins
Uji, Kyoto
Uji has been synonymous with premium Japanese tea for over 800 years. Located south of Kyoto along the Uji River, the region's cool mists, fertile soil, and long tradition of kabuse (shade) cultivation have produced some of Japan's most celebrated teas. Uji matcha is the global benchmark — well-known, widely trusted, and highly sought after by buyers worldwide.
Nara
Nara's tea history stretches back to the 9th century, when Buddhist monks first cultivated tea in the region. The Yamato highlands — particularly areas like Tsukigase and Soni — feature a cool mountain climate, significant day-night temperature variation, and mineral-rich soils. These conditions create ideal stress for the tea plant, concentrating flavor compounds and producing matcha with deep umami and complex aroma. Despite this, Nara matcha remains significantly less exported than Uji — making it a rare, differentiated offering for businesses looking to stand out.
Flavor profile comparison
| Uji matcha | Nara matcha | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Bright, vivid green | Deep, rich emerald green |
| Aroma | Classic fresh grassy, slightly sweet | Complex, layered, mildly earthy |
| Umami | Clean, well-balanced | Deep, lingering, full-bodied |
| Bitterness | Moderate (varies by grade) | Low to none (ceremonial grades) |
| Finish | Smooth, familiar | Long, complex aftertaste |
